Course Description

The Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES’ Tech Center Construction Electricity program is a comprehensive program that prepares students to enter the electrical field. Students interested in hands on learning will find the electrical program both educational and challenging.

All that is needed to begin the course are basic math skills, good hand skills, coordination and a positive attitude. In the two year Construction Electricity program you will learn a wide variety of topics, which include working with the National Electrical Code, residential and commercial wiring methods and materials, blueprint reading, installing conduit, installing many different types of electrical circuits, testing and troubleshooting circuits, and electrical safety, which includes completing a 10-hour OSHA basic safety course.

The Construction Electricity Program follows the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum, which integrates New York State English Language Arts and Math Technology standards by frequently assigning projects that require students to interpret information and enhance their reading and writing skills. Oral communication skills are also developed, as students must explain the process involved in electrical installations.

Graduates of this program can get an entry level job as an electrical apprentice. Many other jobs that are achievable after graduation are utility company worker, cable TV installer, Tele-data communication installer, electrical supply house worker, or an apprenticeship with the IBEW. Graduates may also continue their education at a two- or four-year college or technical institute. Many are encouraged to continue their education by attending a technical college.

If a career in electricity sparks your interest, The Tech Center at Yorktown will give you the energy and skills you need to succeed.
