Course Description

A hands-on approach to learning is offered to all students enrolled in this program. The full program requires two years; however, interested students have the option to attend during one year. The focus of the program is to expose the student to the many aspects of construction carpentry. This can include, but is not limited to, residential construction, framing, or rough carpentry. In addition, finish carpentry is also covered along with cabinet-making and wood joinery. The student will have the ability to learn safe and proper operation of hand and power tools commonly used in the construction field. One of the many goals of the course is to enable the student to work at the maximum safety level in all phases of the workplace environment. Instruction will incorporate laboratory assignments and technical instruction.

When appropriate, “live work projects” will be included for work experience. Some examples of past “live work projects” are  the completion of a 2,700-square-foot addition to the Yorktown Ambulance Corps, renovation of BOCES classrooms, construction of cabinets for the Yorktown Community Nursery School and construction of a kiosk for the Town of Cortlandt Gateway Park. The students can gain marketable skills, which will enable them to pursue post-secondary education or transition into the work force as a carpenter’s helper.
