Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to the 2010-2011 Guide to Services of Putnam/Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), our catalogue of the programs and services we provide to school districts, families and individuals. BOCES exists to create educational opportunities and supportive services that our individual component school districts are unable to provide as efficiently on their own. BOCES helps your district grow through our partnerships with you. Students often come to us unable to see their way clear to independence, to a career, to a future as a successful adult. Here, in partnership with their home school districts, we help them find their way, and they grow.

Over the years, our commitment to excellence and innovation in responding to the needs of our component school districts, the needs of other districts across New York State, and of thousands of adult students as well, has created services that have been recognized repeatedly at the regional, state, and national level as the best that public education has to offer.

In Special Education, we are a recognized leader in opening new possibilities for movement and self-sufficiency for multi-handicapped students; in behavior management and the creation of positive behavioral environments; and in Response to Intervention, which is designed to turn failure into success at the earliest possible moment. Our Regional Alternative High School is a unique regional resource for students who might otherwise be unable to graduate from high school.

Our Career and Technical Education Center offers a wide range of career training opportunities, including our nationally recognized Career Academies, which integrate academics with technical training. We also help hundreds of adults who are changing careers, learning English, or pursuing a delayed high school education.

We’re equally proud of our innovative Center for Educational Leadership, which provides professional development, master’s, doctoral, and in-service programs – for current and aspiring public school leaders in partnership with such prestigious institutions of higher learning as Teachers College, Cornell, Fordham, Bank Street, Pace, College of New Rochelle and Manhattanville. Our Regional Personnel Services provides, among other personnel resources, an on-line application service to over 300 districts.

Our Curriculum Council and professional development programs are considered cutting edge by educators throughout the state. We train thousands of teachers and administrators in the integration of state standards, test administration, innovative curricula, mentorship, crisis management, data analysis, and much more.

Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES works closely with all of its school districts to provide the best possible response to their needs. We are proud of the official recognition that our focus on excellence has received. We are even prouder of the appreciative feedback we have received from the students, teachers, administrators, and school districts we serve. Our commitment is to partner with you to provide the most economical and highest quality services to your staff and students.

Sincerely,

James T. Langlois, Ed.D.
District Superintendent
