Many TBI students do not do well in traditional special education programs, such as those designed for students who are learning disordered, developmentally delayed, or emotionally disturbed. The TBI student has suffered a trauma to the brain which requires very specific interventions.
The TBI Program at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES was developed in 1985 to meet the specific needs of the TBI student. A trained, interdisciplinary team of experienced professionals works with the local school district and the students family to determine an educational placement that integrates all areas of the students functioning. This team continues to work directly with the student, family, and local school district throughout the year. A program is designed for each student that integrates functional cognitive, physical, and emotional goals and objectives. Available services include:
cognitive rehabilitation
speech-language therapy
occupational therapy
physical therapy
hearing impaired services
visually impaired services
individual counseling
vocational training
family support
neuropsychological consultation
