New Visions Engineering students from The Tech Center at PNW BOCES rocked the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) high school robotics competition, coming in second at the Regional Championship held at Pace University on February 5.
The group—called Dead Voltage—had to compete in several competitions prior to this to qualify for regionals, including one at Kennedy High School in Somers and one at Riverside High School in Yonkers in January. Tech Center teachers Carlo Vidrini and Gerry Markel couldn’t be more proud of their team, which included Dominic Iacuone, Mahopac; Ian Murray, Hen Hud; Samantha Robinson, Peekskill; Tom Reid, Carmel; Teresa Mendez, Croton; and Gregory Salguero, Mahopac.
“Our students put forth an exceptional effort,” said Vidrini. “They spent endless hours preparing for the competition, even though they were already conscious of their machine’s capabilities, having qualified the previous week at Riverside High School. Our team was like a well-oiled machine.” The students won all five qualification rounds at Pace, Vidrini said.
“Like all good dreams, even this one came to an end in the finals,” after the students came in second, according to Vidrini. “But Mr. Markel and I could not be more proud of this group of students. Truly a job well done!”
