James M. Ryan, Ed. D - District Superintendent


On June 8, 2016, the Putnam|Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services appointed Dr. James M. Ryan as its district superintendent and chief executive officer. Dr. Ryan has a 42 year career serving school districts and BOCES in the Lower Hudson region. He looks forward to working with our component districts to ensure the offering of quality educational services throughout our BOCES region.

Prior to joining PNW BOCES, Dr. Ryan served as the superintendent of the Carmel Central School District. He has also served as district superintendent, deputy and assistant superintendent of Rockland BOCES, as well as the principal of Ossining High School, assistant principal of Monroe Woodbury High School and teacher/dean of students at Walter Panas High School in the Lakeland Central Schools. Dr. Ryan has also served as adjunct professor at SUNY New Paltz, teaching courses in Educational Leadership.

As district superintendent, Dr. Ryan serves as the chief executive officer of PNW BOCES, as well as the representative of the commissioner of education in our supervisory district, serving as the liaison between our school districts and the commissioner and State Education Department.
