Student Chefs Put Their Hearts Into Valentine’s Day Luncheon

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than at a luncheon at the student-run Educated Palate restaurant? Hospitality students on the campus of Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES put their hearts and passion into preparing and serving a three-course meal to local patrons.

 

CTE Month Celebrates Tech Center at PNW BOCES

They do internships in hospitals, engineering firms, architectural companies, and classrooms. They study physical therapy, veterinary science, cyber security, and film. And that is just a sampling of the courses high school students can take as CTE (Career and Technical Education) students at PNW BOCES.

 

The Yorktown HS Jazz Band Swings into Pines Bridge

The Yorktown High School Jazz Band swung into Pines Bridge School on Monday – and soon had students smiling, clapping and even trying out a few dance moves! YHS Band teacher Emily Kluga said her students love their annual visit to the Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES campus: “They think this is the most special stop on our tour.”

 

New Sensory Room Helps Walden Students Get Ready to Learn

After 15 minutes of balancing, jumping and cycling in the new Sensory Room at the Walden School, elementary school students Kimari Foster and Jericho Hartley weren’t quite ready to leave. Turning to Occupational Therapist Jessica Scully, Jericho recently pleaded, “Can I jump on the crash pad one more time?” 

 

While the Sensory Room may seem like an indoor play space to students at Walden, located on the Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES campus in Yorktown, the room offers far more than fun and games.

 

PNW BOCES students mark International Safer Internet Day

PNW BOCES students at Fox Meadow and Walden schools marked International Safer Internet Day by learning how to protect private information and create a positive digital footprint. Walden student Jace Finch tried out Interland, a browser-based game that teaches digital safety.

 

New Visions Grad Credits Program for Success in Engineering

Adam Howie is reaching for the stars. The recent RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) graduate, who majored in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, has worked on projects for NASA and is now studying for his master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
 
As a student at Somers High School, Howie attended the New Visions Engineering program at the Career and Technical Education Center at Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES. “It was one of the most important things I have done, 100 percent!” he said, adding that the program helped jumpstart his career.

 

Medical Assistant Students View Hyperbaric Chamber

Medical Assistant students from The Tech Center at PNW BOCES got a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and see a hyperbaric chamber during a recent trip to Chappaqua Crossings, part of Northern Westchester Hospital’s services.

 

Fulmar Students Embrace Waste Not, Want Not Strategy

“If something is considered trash, or unwanted, does that mean we can’t use it?” That was the question Catherine Leist, program assistant for the Center for Environmental Education at Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES, asked Fulmar Road Elementary School students when she visited their classrooms recently.
 
The students’ response: “No, we can recycle it!”

 

PNW BOCES Teacher Receives Culinary Educator Award

January 30, 2018

Suzanne Low-Pratt recently received the New York State Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s ProStart Educator of Excellence award and is now in the running to become a national recipient of this prestigious honor. Low-Pratt, a Career and Technical Education teacher at Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES, teaches in the Hospitality Academy on the Yorktown campus.

 

Sports Medicine Students Visit Cerebral Palsy Facility

January 29, 2018

Sports Medicine students from The Tech Center had the opportunity to see the workings of Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy in Patterson, during a recent visit to the facility.
