NV Health Students See Surgery Up Close and Personal

What better way for students to learn about surgical procedures than by watching an operation firsthand? That’s what New Visions Health students from The Tech Center at PNW BOCES recently did when they experienced Liberty Science Center’s Live From Cardiac Surgery program in Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

“Our New Visions Health class saw an aortic valve replacement, which was performed at Morristown Hospital,” said Tech Center teacher Veronica Farlow. “Students were able to ask real-time questions of the surgical team. The students were also able to explore the rest of the Science Center.”

Liberty Science Center’s long-running Live From… program allows students to watch live surgery, including neurosurgery, heart transplant, cardiac, kidney transplant, orthopedic and neonatal surgeries via videoconferencing. During the surgeries, students are permitted to ask questions of the surgical teams at various New Jersey hospitals.
