Licensed Practical Nursing Graduation

“You should be looking forward to the riches that await you in your career in nursing,” said Superintendent Dr. James Langlois, as he addressed graduates of the Licensed Practical Nursing program at Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES in Yorktown Wednesday. “You are most likely to take care of people when they need help the most.”

Twenty-two students graduated from the nursing program, having completed a rigorous course of study and many hours of practical experience in hospitals, nursing homes and other medical settings. The LPN program is an intense nursing study program designed to teach students the ins and outs of the world of nursing, ensuring that they are well prepared for when they enter the nursing profession.

There’s something particularly special about our adult students,” said Dr. James Langlois in his opening remarks to the graduates, noting that adult students have families, jobs and other responsibilities.

Graduate speaker Khadija El-Amin Flowers succinctly stated, “We made it,” complimented by cheers from her fellow classmates. “We started this program as strangers and now we’re ending as family,” a statement that rang true given the hours the graduates had spent together in classrooms and at clinical sites.

Susan Berger, another graduate speaker, said the program started with 20 students but ended with 16. During their time together, she said, “We lost sleep, we lost our sanity” and “we shared lunches, we shared tears and we shared scrubs.” She also described the program as a family underlining the connection the graduates felt to one another.

Judy Gromer, facilitator of the nursing program, told the graduates “You have excelled” and gave them one last challenge: Continue to make a difference in the world and in other people’s lives and to never let the light that shines in each of them burn out.

In her closing remarks, Alyson Trudeau, coordinator of adult and continuing education, said remember “To the world you might be one person, but to one person you are the world.”
