Tech Halloween Blood Drive Draws PNW BOCES Students and Staff

October 26, 2018

Instead of taking blood like Dracula, students and staff prepared for Halloween on Friday by giving pints of the lifesaving fluid during the annual Blood Drive organized by the Health Careers Academy at The Tech Center on the Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES campus.

“It’s for a good cause – so if you can do it, you should,” said Anais Silva, a senior from the Lakeland School District enrolled in the CNA program. More than 50 students enrolled in Tech Center health, culinary, engineering and other programs gave blood, along with PNW BOCES staff, at the New York Blood Center drive. The drive, which has been going on for more than 20 years, is always timed around Halloween.
New Visions Health teacher Veronica Farlow said her students do whatever is needed to support the Blood Center, registering donors, escorting them to get their blood drawn and offering refreshments afterwards. Students even baked cookies to add to the goodies brought by the blood center. For their part, students said they donated blood to give back to their communities.

“I just wanted to help people who need a little help,” said Katie McGuigan from Hendrick Hudson, who is in the Tech Center’s Culinary Arts program. “It’s for a good cause, so why not,” agreed Tiffany Foxworth, a Lakeland junior in the Certified Nurses Aide program.
