Somers’ Brianna Lux, in BOCES Medical Assistant Program, Recognized as Student of Distinction

October 24, 2018

Brianna Lux was poised and gracious as teachers, administrators, and family congratulated her after receiving a Student of Distinction Award at the Somers Central School District Board meeting on October 23.

“Brianna Lux is an outstanding student,” said Dr. James Ryan, district superintendent of Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES, acknowledging her academic excellence in the Medical Assistant track of Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES Health Career Academy. Somers Superintendent Dr. Raymond Blanch joined him at the podium to award Lux a commemorative medal and certificate.

Lux is part of the first group in BOCES’ two-year Medical Assistant program. Students spend four-hour days at the Tech Center at BOCES’ Yorktown campus where they take both academic and career classes. The schedule freed Lux to intern at Yorktown Imaging and work in a cardiologist’s office while still in high school. She is also the treasurer of the BOCES’ chapter of Skills USA, an organization that supports career and technical education, and has been invited into the National Technical Honor Society.

“Lux has the traits necessary to excel in the medical field, and in life,” said her Medical Assistant teacher Maria Pontbriand at the ceremony.

“A host of adjectives could be used to describe Brianna: motivated, problem solver, and leader are just a few,” said Pontbriand. “Brianna is unassuming, keeps her eye on her priorities, always sees the glass as half-full, and is genuinely kind to everyone she meets. Those things truly make her a Student of Distinction.”

“Brianna flourished in this program,” said BOCES Tech Principal Steve Lowery in the brief recess following Lux’s recognition. “She will be in a beautiful spot—able to work alongside physicians in medical offices and clinics as well as attend college.”

“I hope to go to college and become a registered nurse,” said Lux.

Lux will be a second-generation Somers graduate. Her father, George Lux, also attended Somers Central School District and participated in Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES Career and Technical Education.
