New Visions Health Student Job Shadows Hospital Pros

November 15, 2018

Hendrick Hudson High School student Erica Andre is gaining real-world experience in the medical field thanks to her job shadowing as a New Visions Health student at The Tech Center at PNW BOCES.
“Erica had the opportunity to shadow the nursing staff at New York Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital Center recently,” said her Career and Technical Education teacher Ronnie Farlow.
“Recently she was able to observe a bronchoscopy and a colonoscopy in the Ambulatory Surgery Center,” Farlow said.
Students in the New Visions Health program rotate through 20-plus  areas in local hospitals two days a week from November to May as part of their internship and job shadowing experience.
“Erica is interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Her goal is to become a neurosurgeon,” said Farlow. “She has a passion for helping others and is working as  a Certified Nursing Assistant at Cortland Healthcare Center.  She also volunteers for the Peekskill Ambulance Corp and the Peekskill Firehouse. Erica is President of the Skills USA here at the Tech Center, and she attended a leadership conference in Albany last week.”  She is also earning college credits in the program.
New Visions Health will hold an open house at Northwell Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco on November 19 from 5 to 7 pm.
The program is open for enrollment to current juniors (who will be seniors next year). Students need to have a minimum GPA of 85, complete a writing sample, have recommendation letters from two teachers and be interviewed by the New Visions team to be accepted into the program.
