Darwin Arias Named Student of Distinction

April 26, 2018

Darwin Arias’s incredible work ethic, academic excellence, and attention to detail will make him a tremendous success in the medical field, according to his New Visions Health teacher Veronica Farlow.

“Darwin entered our rigorous academic New Visions Health program to explore health care careers, and he is an exceptionally motivated and focused student. He has a passion for learning as well as for helping others,” said Farlow.

For these reasons, Arias was selected as a Student of Distinction for Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES Tech Center and honored at the Ossining Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 25. District Superintendent Dr. James Ryan, Tech Center Principal Steve Lowery and Farlow were all on hand for the celebration.

Ossining Superintendent Raymond Sanchez placed a medal around Arias’s neck, and he received a certificate commemorating the honor. For her part, Farlow couldn’t say enough about Arias.

As part of the New Visions program, Arias spent two days a week in New York Presbyterian Hospital at Hudson Valley Hospital Center rotating through 24 different departments. He was an asset to the program, with his work ethic and passion.

“Darwin has an attention to detail that is rare among high school seniors,” Farlow said. “He works independently with great creativity and enthusiasm. His attention to detail for classroom projects like creating a health occupation brochure, and presentations for class exceeded my high expectations.”

Through the New Visions program he has received numerous college credits, and at Ossining High School he is on the high honor roll and has received several awards.

But it is not only his academic excellence and work ethic that make him an exceptional student, according to Farlow. “Darwin has the compassion to appreciate difficult social issues and the leadership qualities to work for solutions in civic action,” she said.

Arias, who has been accepted to Columbia University on a scholarship and wants to be a physician, will make an excellent healthcare professional who is empathetic and caring, according to Farlow. “Darwin will succeed in any endeavor in his future and will make a positive contribution wherever he goes,” she said. “And he has the experience to meet all of the challenges before him.”
