Play’s the Thing at Teens and Tots Open House

October 27, 2017

Preschool aged children had a lot of fun at the recent open house for Teens and Tots, the on-campus preschool at The Tech Center at Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES. So did their “teachers,” the Childhood Development and Education students who study education in the program at Tech.
“The philosophy of the preschool is learning through play,” said Tech Center teacher Melissa Davis. “The high school students are very excited to work with the preschoolers.  This is where they get to apply all the information they are learning in class to a hands-on experience. It is the highlight of their junior year.”
Corinne Sherblom, from Croton-Harmon High School, is excited about working at the preschool. “I like watching kids grow and seeing how they learn through time,” she said.
Parents, who brought their preschoolers to check out the program, were equally enthusiastic. “My older child was a student at the preschool last year, and he loved it,” said Jamie Thomas, who brought her younger child to the open house.
The Childhood Development and Education class at The Tech Center teaches high school students about child development, educational theory, classroom management, and education law in addition to the experience of running the on-site Teens and Tots preschool two days a week.
Teens are the teachers at the Teens and Tots preschool on the Tech Center campus of PNW BOCES. Preschool classes begin November 9.
