What is RTI?
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a school-wide system for delivery of high-quality instruction in academics and behavior. RTI provides a framework to ensure that the needs of ALL students are being met in a timely and effective manner. The major components of the RTI framework are:
- School-wide system for supporting all students
- Levels or tiers of instruction: Increasingly intensive, individualized interventions
- Instruction based on reliable research
- Systematic monitoring of student progress
- Instructional planning by teams using data about a student's response to intervention
What is the RTI Institute at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES?
The RTI Institute at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES provides training by nationally recogized experts to school-based teams in the fundamentals of RTI. The training includes technical assistance and team planning time for creating a plan to implement RTI practices in each school. The RTI Institute provides training in multiple formats, including the following components:
School-Based Team Training
- Applying RTI principles to delivery of instruction requires long-term planning and on-going support in implementation. The School-Based Team Training in provided over two years.
- In year one, the team attends training together for five sessions in the school year to learn about RTI principles and to create a plan to incorporate those principles into their school system.
- In year two, the team attends an additional five sessions over the school year to receive support in implementing the universal plan and to enhance the more intensive levels or tiers of instruction.
On-Site Technical Assistance
While the Team Training and workshops provide opportunities to learn in the classroom and to collaborate with other schools, it is also important to receive on-site support customized to a school's or district's particular situation. Expert consultants on the RTI framework in both academic and behavioral areas are available for on-going support in a school, including:
- Consultation to district leadership teams and school-based RTI teams
- Presentations at Superintendent's Conference and professional development days
- Formal evaluations of a program, which include written reports and follow-up action plan meetings with teams.
