BOCES is the Board of Cooperative
Educational Services, a regional education agency that was established
in 1948 by the state legislature. Putnam/Northern Westchester
BOCES, one of 38 in New York State, acts as a regional center
to support local school districts, offering quality, cost-effective
programs and services.

Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES serves approximately 58,000
preschoolers through 12th graders, plus thousands of adults in 18
school districts: Bedford, Brewster, Briarcliff, Carmel, Chappaqua,
Croton-Harmon, Garrison, Haldane, Hendrick Hudson, Katonah-Lewisboro,
Lakeland, Mahopac, North Salem, Ossining, Peekskill, Putnam Valley,
Somers and Yorktown. We also serve school districts and municipalities
in Rockland, Southern Westchester and Dutchess counties. |

The main campus is on BOCES Drive in Yorktown Heights, with ancillary
campuses on Fox Meadow Road in Yorktown, at the Madden Outdoor Education
Center on Miller Hill Road in Kent, and at 12 local school buildings
in 10 school districts. |

BOCES has no direct taxing powers. It is supported
by payments from local school districts for requested services and
through state and federal funding formulas. Local districts receive
state aid for BOCES services they use. |

Who is responsible for running a BOCES? |

The seven-member BOCES board is elected to three-year terms by
members of local school boards. The District Superintendent serves
as the chief executive officer of BOCES and as a liaison between
the New York State Commissioner of Education and the component districts
served by BOCES. |
