Hi Everyone,
For a FREE Hispanic Heritage Month poster featuring back-to-back English and Spanish text, call (800) 342-9810, ext. 6260, or e-mail
orders@nysutmail.org. Please reference Project No. 514 and include your name and mailing address. The Poster this year features Julia de Burgos, the Puerto Rican poet, and so is very much on target for Social Studies/English Language Arts and the study of the culture of the Western hemisphere.
I asked for two so I could display the poster simultaneously in Spanish and English. NYSUT offers these also for African-American History Month and Women's History Month. It would be great to collect them over several years and then use them in a gallery walk.
While I am writing, I wanted to let you know my former student Peg Tyre has written a very provocative book, The Trouble With Boys. It's all about what is happening to boys in schools. The book was published on Tuesday, and she spoke at the Ossining Public Library on her book's "birthday." She was featured on the Today Show this morning. There is an excerpt from Chapter 8 at
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26625249/ and the video of her segment is at today.msnbc.msn.com Its entitled Helping Boys Thrive in School #26657112 Peg will be coming back to the Ossining Public Library for a Panel Discussion on October 7, 2008 at 7 p.m. By the way, she won a Pulitzer for the orginial article she wrote for Newsweek. Needless to say I am very proud of her!
