About the river

- Total length: 315 miles from Lake Tear of the Clouds on Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks to New York Harbor.
- The river drains an almost 14,000-square-mile watershed in parts of five states: New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey.
- Tides - usually two high and two low every 24 hours - affect the river as far north as the dam at Troy.
- Saltwater from the ocean works its way up the river. In a typical spring, freshwater from rain and melting snow holds the saltwater front between the Tappan Zee Bridge and Yonkers.
