Hi Everyone -
Since many of you were not at the the feedback session on May 12, 2008 I thought I would share what was produced at our yearly meeting. Some items are already in posts on thi Discussion Board, others will become available during the next few weeks on the SSELA site itself.
* Sunnyside now has a field trip designed specifically for Grade 1 called "A Cottage on the Hudson." This program directly supports the Social Studies curriculum that focuses on “My Family and Other Families – Now and Long Ago.” Students learn about Irving and his family through stories illustrating how people lived in the mid- 19th Century. There are pre-visit materials, touchable reproduction objects, and post-visit materials. The ELA connections include a Journal activity, visuals to describe, and reading selections. These materials were created by Catherine Lopane-Chulla and Lisa Kedem of the Tarrytown School District. Catherine and Lisa are part of our SSELA family and we are very proud of the materials they have produced.
You will find this posted under Field Trips on the SSELA website or you can find everything you need to plan your visit at http://www.hudsonvalley.org/templates/HHV_Learn/pdfs/ss/Cottage-on-the-Hudson.pdf
* The group created two talking books: "Who's Who in Your School" for Unit 3 lesson 4 and "What is a Family?" for Unit 2 lesson 2 day 2. These will be incorporated into the SSELA website. If you haven't tried talking books with your class, you are missing a treat!
* The Horton egg sorting activity for Rules and Laws has been translated into a Smartboard Activity and will be posted to the website at Unit 1 Lesson 3 along with the original lesson.
*A webbing alternative to the creation of a Community Mobile in Unit 3 lesson 5 is found in another post on the discussion board. The group felt the creation of the mobile took too much time.
Have a great summer. Remember participating districts are welcome to send 2 teachers who are new to the district or to the grade level to SSELA training on Monday, September 22nd at no extra cost to the district.
