Back on Track:
An Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension

No one wants to see a student suspended from school. The suspended student misses valuable classroom time and receives no guidance or counseling that could help prevent future suspensions. That's why Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES created the Back-on-Track program as an educational alternative to long-term, out-of-school suspension.

Back-on-Track serves students in grades 7-12 who would otherwise remain at home, receiving a couple of hours of instruction from a tutor each day. Students come to the Fox Meadow Middle/High School where they receive instruction and tutorial in science, mathematics, English and social studies. Teachers are dually credited in content areas and special education. Students attend either from 7:50 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. or from 10:25 a.m. to 1:53p.m. and are bused to the Fox Meadow School by their home district.

In addition to the academics offered, students receive counseling from Student Assistance Services, with a focus on substance-abuse prevention and decision-making. Students learn goal-setting and decision-making strategies to assist them in the transition back to their home school districts or other settings.
