Environmental Kits

Arctic Tundra
This kit has been designed as a supplementary tool for teaching students about the Arctic and Antarctica regions. It contains a teacher’s guide providing background information and a plethora of activities, as well as the necessary materials to implement them. Topics covered include a history of each region, a survey of the natural resources, a history of exploration in each region, the environment, animals, and native peoples. This kit was developed with funding from an EPA grant.

Coral Reefs: The Rainforest of the Sea
If you can’t take your students to visit a coral reef then this is the next best thing! Contained in this kit are videos, slides, CD Roms, samples, transparencies, books, games, and activities. Also included is a teacher’s guide containing extensive background information, resources, and activity suggestions. This kit was developed with funding from an EPA grant. Sci 21 5/4 6/4

Desert Ecosystem
This kit has been designed as a supplementary tool for teaching students about deserts. The kit contains a teacher’s guide providing background information and a plethora of activities, as well as the necessary materials to implement them. Kit materials include: coyote and red fox pelts, black widow and scorpion specimens, audio and video tapes, books, posters, games, magazines, and a segment on the people of the deserts. The activities are designed to be hands-on and integrate the curriculum area. This kit was developed with funding from an EPA grant. Sci 21 5/4 6/4

Environmental Shopping Tour
This kit provides teachers with the information and materials necessary to teach about the environmental effects of packaging, the importance of precycling, and how to set up an environmental shopping tour. This kit is an excellent follow-up to the school site program, I’m Only One Person, What Can I Do?

Endangered Species
This kit provides teachers with a range of information on endangered species including current laws, location and range, human impact, as well as things we can do to help. Special effort has been made to include endangered animals from every ecosystem studied in grades 2-6. It contains a teacher’s guide with activities and background information, games, posters, globes, children's books, video tapes, a slide show, and toys.


Native American
The Native American kit has been developed by Hudson Valley Native American consultant, Peggy Turco. It contains genuine artifacts made by Native Americans, a cassette tape of Indian flute music, an introduction booklet to the Lenape, and 50 color slides of the Lenape people, ceremonies and old pictures complete with a script. Finally, it contains a teacher's guide on how to use the kit.

There are 3 Native American kits available. Please understand that most classes study Native Americans in the fall and it is the most requested time. Although we try to accommodate your time request, it is not always possible.

Trees
This kit has been designed as a supplementary tool for teaching students about trees. It includes a teacher’s guide containing activities and lessons as well as many materials necessary to implement them. The manual is divided into several sections, each focusing on a different element in the study of trees. These include tree identification, measurement of trees, ecosystems, environmental issues, and the tree as a system. Kit materials include: posters, books, videos, display material, and tree samples. The activities are designed to be hands-on and integrate science, language arts, social studies, art, music, and physical education. This kit was developed with support from Save-a-Tree in Bedford Hills.

Tropical Rainforests
This updated kit contains a teacher's guide with background information on the rainforest along with suggested activities. Many of the activities integrate science with other curriculum areas. The kit contains games, posters, plant samples, children's books, audio and video tapes, slide shows, a computer game, and toys, and products from the rainforest. Some materials have come directly from the rainforest! This kit was developed with funding from an EPA grant. Sci 21 5/4 6/4

Wetlands
This kit contains a teacher’s guide with background information and suggested activities. Some of the topics covered are salt and fresh water wetlands, laws and regulations, flora and fauna, and the importance and preservation of wetlands. The kit includes books, magazines, audio and videotapes, posters, puzzles, a wetlands play that can be acted out, and many activity guides. This kit was developed with funding from an EPA grant. Whales
This kit has been designed as a supplementary tool for teaching students about this magnificant marine mammal. It includes a teacher’s guide containing activities, lessons and the necessary materials to implement them. The materials include baleen, posters, books, videos, display materials, and models. The activities are designed to be "hands-on" and integrate science, language arts, social studies, art, music, and physical education.
