DUTIES:
Must have a strong background in environmental science and ecology to teach programs such as:

  • ecosystem studies: pond ecology, forest ecology, marine ecosystems and tropical rainforest
  • sustainability programs: ecological footprint and sustainable food and energy systems
  • wildlife: wildlife CSI, Turtle, Frogs & Snakes, Birds of Prey and Owl pellets
  • team building programs: challenge course and orienteering
  • history programs: Native American, colonial living skills and cemetery
  • unique programs such as our monster storms and climate change program, the Earth Portable Classroom and our collaborative predator program with a local wolf center.

 

In addition, this position is responsible for animal/birds of prey care, the development of exhibits, maintaining and developing program material and working with a limited number of overnights. Birds of prey training will be provided.
Candidate must be able to perform some manual labor to fulfill site custodial duties and provide rotating weekend facility security duty.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • an undergraduate degree in the environmental education, conservation, biology fields.
  • minimum one-year teaching experience in a nature center or residential center setting
  • a strong natural science background and an understanding of sustainable systems
  • experience/knowledge of the Next Gen Science Standards or the new NYS Science Learning Standards desirable

CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED:

Creativity, flexibility, independent initiative and good judgment. Must have a car to drive to schools (mileage reimbursed). Position includes housing. Must be available to provide weekend coverage on a rotating basis with other staff. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to work well with students, teachers and school administrators. Successful candidates must have a positive, can-do attitude and be committed to the BOCES Mission of Service and Innovation through Partnership.
